The way my relationship with renderers stands at the moment is like this: You input data by way of a model and make various codifications based on materials and form. Then you press a button and the renderer (renditioner?) puts out an image that is loosely based on your ideas and mostly based on looking cool. I know there's a stronger connection between the data you input and the results that come out, but so far each time I press that button, what I get is as suprising and magical as the first.

I'm scanning sketches and diagrams this weekend. My studio has started to slow down as other classes are getting more intense (and the other studios start monopolizing the lab computers for their mid-crits). I'm finally getting better at documenting my work as I go along, but it's a little too late for the work from previous semesters that have been destroyed without proper photography or scanning. Oh, regrets! I guess all I can do is try and rebuild (or is it restore? definitely not renovate..) them by December.

i've been in the computer lab for 22 hours, except for moving my car and getting coffee, just once each!
i feel CRAZY and i didn't even meet with my professor because i am so NUMB.
it's like staying in bed when you don't want to get up and do work. you can sleep for a while, but eventually you'll wake up and all that shit you were avoiding's gonna make your life HELL.
(basically i'm prolly not gonna get a good grade in studio this semester)
(and not because of anything else but my escapist attitude.)
(someone come and get me out of this seat it's so hard.)

I totally forgot about one class being cancelled today. I was late late late and worried, only to find the doors locked and unsure if I was just locked out or if they really locked the doors to the auditorium if you were late. It took me until the stairwell to remember that there wasn't class and everybody was locked out. : /

I'm finally over that "boo being back is weird" feeling. It's schooltime and the weather is super and I bought myself some pens and chinese food and I'm filling in my new planner and putting cheese on top of whatever food I cook and now it's time to get over whatever down feelings are left after all this indulgence. I like Lawrence so much!

I still have the wound I made in my left index finger the night before I left. Before, it was a gaping hole in me that wouldn't shut in South Korea's cold, dry air, and then it was a dark brown lump inside of me in Malaysia's warm monsoon winds, and now it is a large surface scab, the edges white and flaking, tempting me to rip it off before I return home.
We'll see.

We're leaving Asia. We're leaving Singapore at 01/13 22:40 and leaving Seoul at 01/14 19:15. Even arriving in Seoul isn't arriving, no, not until Chicago maybe can I say I've arrived (but at 01/14 19:00, incidentally back in time from the departure from South Korea, so maybe this arrival is obscured by the overlap of the later, preceding departure) but my god, mark my words, 01/14 21:23, there is going to be an ARRIVAL! It will be so nice to be home and on my own on that lonely drive from my parents' to Lawrence, and the time for waiting is over! I'm on the plane on my first departure. It's time to go!

It's 5:23 am and we're about to get on a bus to Daegu. It's further South, so hopefully it will be warmer. Seoul is amazing, despite the cold, and we stayed out until 2:30 this morning just drinking it all in. The rest will have to wait until later, but I can't wait to tell you about how impressive the fabric of this city is! Come back with me one day?

It's 1:14 in South Korea, and Soeul is amazing and full of people. It was like a mosh pit times 13 hours ahead and full of beautiful and adorable women and men, and me in my funny boots and strange asian-english accent (just being around broken english brings it out, which is so strange because I barely speak Tagalog!) and my friends all drunk and raucous and giving shots to the bartenders so they forget that we're in a group of 30+ obnoxious Americans. I hope noone finds out that Jae and Kapila are using our program fees to get us drunk after lunch and dinner every day. It was a good night, a great day, and a wonderful way to end 2008. I said last New Year's that 2008 was going to be brilliant and I was so right! Thank you, everyone that was a part of it, whether you know it or not.

Now I'm going to bed and falling asleep to that Walkmen song that I can't get enough of (thank you Kenny!) and waking up for a free brunch and a free day to find mmmg and start on our Palace Visitor Center project.

some flight attendant fell deathly ill and was carted away to the emergency room.
my flight was cancelled and i'm stuck here until monday, ripping two days of seoul off the itinerary.
i feel like staying at the airport until monday morning and just seething until that flight leaves. SHIT. this is totally life punishing me for making a big deal out of leaving. well, i've learned my lesson. KEEP IT CASUAL, NO BIG GOODBYES AND YOU WILL LEAVE GRACEFULLY. it's all kind of embarassing and very much dissapointing.

Flight delay! I'd be pissed but moodie's flight was sitting on the runway waiting for a crew for an hour and a half, where as I get to spend a few hours with my mom, finally free of whining toddlers and other Christmas joys. I love spending time with my mom! She's so level headed and COOL when she's not being attacked by family or work.
Another thing I've gained an appreciation for in the last few hours is my blackberry. Was that sentence badly structured? I don't care because I made it on my phone. I also get unlimited incoming texts in Asia as well as full use of google maps and unlimited email (except I may not find a carrier in south Korea-unless anyone knows if KYSWCMA works on something other than a g3 phone. What's that called again? I should make max read this.)

But that's all "shop talk" according to my mother, so I'll cut it out. SHIT! I just remembered that there won't be quarters in the windows of new house. Sarah- if you read this and decide to blindly take up Filipino superstition, could you put two quarters in the sill of each window of the house? Doors don't count, but taping a dollar to the front door helps, and you can set them on the floor below the ones with plastic insulation blocking the sills. It's nice to place one in each corner of the sill. You just have to put them up for the turning of the new year and you can get them back on new year's day if you want! (though I always thought that picking up the spare quarters when you needed them was a part of the "year of fortune" thing).

There are dogs sort of wandering around the airport, Jennifer aniston is naked on the cover of gq, and I'm going to south Korea, Singapore, and Malaysia. Ri I I I ght NOW!

It's Christmas Eve and I have a migraine. It's kind of painful to use my brain, but I can't help but think of my dad and the migraines that kept us from Halloweens and Fourths of July and the windows I looked out of as I swore at my dad and fireworks and dressed up children and their obsessive, controlling moms, because they were put in cheer leading camp, and their drunken, negligent fathers, because they came to class bragging about breaking the glass coffee table with his camera when they were in a fight. Now I just curse my niece and nephew because they are difficult, like all children, and all I can do is ignore it until they grow up.

My decision to come to KU came after hours submerged in this image in the Architectural Record, forming the idea in my mind that all the boring architecture/engineering shit I was about to subject myself to might actually be worth it, if I could just do something as elegant and informed.

Lawrence is quiet.

These pictures are from my bedroom when I was a senior in high school. Immediately following my move to Lawrence, my dad tore the posters and pictures off the walls and painted the room blue. You wouldn't recognize it now; my mother's done a lovely job of cleaning things up.

I actually enjoyed being at my parents' house for these past few days. I forgot my laptop and my phone charger, so I spent one night chatting on aim and stalking around the neighborhood on my phone, one night escaping to diners and familiar houses in Kansas City, and one night smoking out of my old bedroom windows and watching adult swim. It was a pretty comprehensive reflection on the last four years I spent in that house.

I'm falling back in love with life right now and it's pretty serious. I'd better learn to schedule my sleep better around it, though, or else I'm going to forget what it's like to bury your head in a pillow and actually feel what it's like to lie down before passing out and immediately running to class.

It's an activity that really makes me feel great. Hair grows out of your head. Isn't that weird? Why should we feel weird about cutting it ourselves? There's no sense in being scared of messing up, as long as you have roommates to tell you what parts in the back are longer. Just keep cutting until it's right, because it will just keep growing, even after you're dead. Let's all listen to Regina Spektor more and, damnit, let's start being courageous!

I'm making a decent effort of it myself. My lips are still purple from last night's wine, and I remember closing my eyes and moving around and opening them to find everyone displaced, wish-wandering around the living room and myself just locked within my bopping head. Short hair is much more satisfying to swish from side to side, and anything that makes me feel more like a Peanuts character on the dance floor is what's absolutely best for me.

The sun is setting and all the dog-walkers and attractive people on their bikes are rushing home. I have class in half on hour (/all time time, anymore) and I'm using up the last excuse I had to stay home (laundry) so I could be apart of this afternoon (beautiful).

There's no better way to acquaint yourself with a kitchen table than filling out paperwork and sketching floor plans. The light filters out early in the 3' gap between our house and neighbors'.

It may be overdone, but I really enjoy living in this house (#8)
